His and Her Henley's

Yay, so I get to feature my husband Kyrus on the blog today! I wanted to make a t-shirt for him so I showed him Simplicity pattern 8613 and asked him which view he liked best. He chose view B, which was the most difficult of the three, but thankfully it was also the one featured in the sew-along. Have I mentioned how much I looooooove sew-alongs? Lol. But seriously though, every pattern should come with one.

I figured that since this pattern required a placket (something I'm not super comfortable doing yet), I might as well get some more practice in and make a shirt for myself as well. For my shirt, I modified Simplicity pattern 8334 which is actually a Mimi G dress pattern that I've made once before. I'll post a pic of that too.

But first, can we talk about how handsome my husband is?! I mean DAYUM! Lol sorry, I'm all in my feels because we're coming up on our 1 year wedding anniversary. I'm a lucky girl!

Anyway, now let's talk about some of the obvious flaws in the construction of both of these shirts. I used a stretch stitch on both shirts because of the knit fabric, but somehow Kyrus' shirt ended up with wavy seams where the sleeves connect. I also think I may have overstretched the neckband because of the puckering that's happening around the neckline. Still, I think it looks good on him!

Our dog wanted in on the photo shoot as well. I didn't sew anything for him though lol.

On my shirt I did a much better job with the neckband, but I messed up on the placket. If you look closely, you can see the puckering fabric right around where I stitched the X for the placket. I also forgot to check for one of my notches when attaching the armbands, so there's a bit of pulling on one side.

I used snaps rather than buttons for both shirts. Gold on mine because I thought it looked nice with the gold flecks in the fabric, and black on his.

Overall, I'm very happy with how both turned out. I'm trying not to be too big of a perfectionist since I'm still very new to sewing in general, but especially new to working with knit fabrics. We will definitely both be seen in public wearing these shirts lol. I really do love the fabrics I chose. I got the fabric for mine at JoAnn's (on clearance I think) and I'm pretty sure I ordered his fabric online from fabricmartfabrics.com. It's a jersey knit and has a luxurious, soft feel to it. Feels great against the skin.

Here is a look at the Simplicity 8334 dress that I made before. This one was with an extremely flimsy knit fabric from Walmart that I will not be purchasing again. It was incredibly frustrating to work with and it didn't have good recovery at all. I felt like all of my pattern pieces were distorted and stretched out before I even had a chance to sew them.

I think the dress was supposed to be midi length, but I'm so short that it ended up being almost maxi length, which I was fine with. I'm not usually a fan of how midi length dresses look on me.
