Regal Maxi Skirt

I had a lot of fun making this Regal Maxi Skirt for my mother-in-law. As with any sewing project, I ran into a few snags along the way, but I managed to follow Mimi-G’s tutorial and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

I made this with a non-stretch, lightweight, flowy fabric that we picked from JoAnn’s. We were both so in love with the colors!

I ran into my first snag with the fabric though. I should have checked the width of it, but I was so enamored with the colors that I didn’t even think to look. When I went to make my first cut, I realized that the fabric wasn’t wide enough for me to make it with the stripes going vertically like I had originally planned. I ended up having to cut it with the stripes going horizontally, which isn’t ideal, but I didn’t see any way around it based on the amount of fabric I had. So that’s what I did.

The tutorial was pretty straight forward and easy to follow except that at one point the camera was zoomed in too far and I couldn’t see which end of the fabric Mimi G was working on, but other than that it was super easy. It was my first time doing gathers, so I was nervous about that, but Mimi G explained it clearly and I had no trouble at all. I’m glad I followed her recommendation to grab a glass of wine before starting that part!

The belt loops and sash were optional, but I knew from the beginning I would do them. I think it ties the whole look together and looks so more “regal” which is what a Regal Maxi Skirt should be! After hemming the skirt, I had enough fabric left over to make a scarf. As you can see it looks great with the overall look.

The zipper installation was super breezy. Thankfully I didn’t make any major mistakes, so I didn’t use my seam ripper much, just to remove the basting stitches.

After looking at the finished product, stunning as it is, I don’t think I would make this skirt for myself unless I modified it. I think it’s absolutely beautiful, but there are just too many gathers for my taste. As a personal preference, I don’t like to have that much volume around my waist. But I think this is a beautiful skirt that will flatter many body types.
